Topsail Island is a precious nesting ground for Loggerhead Sea Turtles, migrating ashore and building their nests overnight between mid-May and mid-August. These nest sites must not be disturbed during their 45-90-day incubation, after which the hatchlings journey back to the sea.
Military and maritime buffs have plenty to do, including the quest for Blackbeard the Pirate’s remnants of treasure! During the Cold War, Topsail Island was used as a secret missile test site – Operation Bumblebee – and home to the development of the ram jet engine.
